City Make it 2 From 2 in Japan With Late Bayern Victory

Manchester City secured a hard-fought 2-1 win against Bayern Munich during the Japan leg of their pre-season tour at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo. The match attracted a sold-out crowd of 65,049 fans, setting a new record attendance for football at the stadium.

In the sweltering heat of the Japanese summer, both teams fielded strong lineups. City donned their newly released electric-feel PUMA third kit for the 2023/24 season and dominated possession in the opening stages.

It was the City Academy that shone in the first half, as James McAtee opened the scoring in the 21st minute with an impressive goal. The 18-year-old McAtee capitalized on Rico Lewis’ excellent build-up play to find the back of the net.

However, the Bundesliga champions showed their quality as the game progressed, exploiting loose passing from a City side still adjusting after a six-week break. Former City player Leroy Sane threatened the goal but was denied by a combination of Rico Lewis and goalkeeper Ederson.

After an array of half-time substitutions, City had an opportunity to double their lead in the second half. Bernardo Silva’s clever play set up Rodrigo with a chance, but his shot was cleared.

In the intense heat, both teams struggled to maintain their energy levels. Mathys Tel, a second-half substitute for Bayern, equalized in the 81st minute, capitalizing on an impressive save from Ederson to score from close range.

City responded swiftly, and Aymeric Laporte secured the victory with a well-timed shot from close range. The defence held firm in the final minutes, ensuring that Bayern couldn’t find an equalizer.

With this victory in Japan, Manchester City continues its preparations for the upcoming season under the guidance of manager Pep Guardiola. The team’s next challenge will be against Atletico Madrid in Seoul on Sunday, where they will aim to build on their successful pre-season campaign.

Pep Guardiola Reaction

“Two great teams. Every time we lose the ball in the positions, the pace that Bayern have is something incredible. It was a good test. No injuries. Minutes in our legs for the next weeks.

“The result is not important. We know each other quite well. Satisfied for the performance. Thank you Tokyo. Tomorrow we are leaving for Korea and our last game before we go back to Manchester.”
