DJ Neptune Refutes Fraud Allegations by Laycon Over Unpaid Royalties
Popular Nigerian Disc Jockey, DJ Neptune, has denied allegations of defrauding singer and former Big Brother Naija winner, Laycon, over unpaid royalties from their collaboration on the “Nobody Icons” remix.
Laycon recently took to social media to claim that he had not received any royalties from the song, which was released four years ago. The reality star expressed frustration over what he perceived as financial dishonesty.
Responding to the claims during an appearance on the ‘Zero Conditions’ podcast, DJ Neptune clarified that there was no wrongdoing on his part. He explained that the unpaid royalties were tied to the music business’s contractual process and the need for the distribution company to recoup its investment.
“Laycon is my brother, and I want to make it clear that no one took anyone’s money,” DJ Neptune stated. “In the music business, when there’s a deal with a distribution company or label, they give you advanced marketing money, and they need to recover that. That’s where we are with the ‘Nobody Icons’ remix.”
Neptune further explained that the issue revolved around documentation, and he had involved his legal team in the matter when Laycon reached out. He expressed disappointment with how the singer publicly called him out, making it seem like there was fraudulent intent.
“There was a conversation between our lawyers, and maybe my fault was not following up. A percentage was proposed to Laycon’s team, but they rejected it. The discussion stalled from there,” Neptune added.
He emphasized that the ongoing legal process would resolve the situation while maintaining that he had no intention of defrauding Laycon.
