Drake Celebrates First Song to Hit 3 Billion Spotify Streams, Tags WizKid in Tribute

Drake, the prolific Canadian rapper, has achieved yet another milestone in his illustrious career as one of his songs, “One Dance,” surpasses three billion streams on Spotify.

Taking to his Instagram Stories on Tuesday (February 20), Drake shared the exciting news, revealing a text message from OVO Sound president Mr. Morgan congratulating him on the accomplishment. According to Morgan, “One Dance” is Drake’s first track to achieve the remarkable feat and the seventh ever on Spotify to reach three billion streams.

In the text message, Morgan reminisced about the genesis of “One Dance,” disclosing that the song was initially titled “High Powered” and recounting a conversation with Drake about its potential success.

Alongside the screenshot of Morgan’s message, Drake tagged WizKid, the guest vocalist on “One Dance,” along with producers Noah “40” Shebib and Nineteen85, acknowledging their contributions to the song’s success.

This achievement also marks a significant milestone for WizKid, who becomes the first African artist to have a song with over three billion Spotify streams.

Released in 2016 as part of Drake’s album “Views,” “One Dance” soared to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, marking Drake’s inaugural No. 1 single on the chart as a lead artist.

Reflecting on the song’s success and his collaboration with WizKid during an interview with Rap Radar in 2019, Drake emphasized the importance of honouring the inspirations behind his music.

“I gotta at least honour the person that handed me off the football before I ran for the touchdown,” Drake expressed. “Because when I do things, they do get magnified and amplified, people can sometimes feel uncomfortable.”

Drake’s “One Dance” previously made history as the first song to reach one billion streams on Spotify in December 2016.

With over 94 billion streams globally, Drake remains the highest-streamed artist on the platform, solidifying his status as a dominant force in the music industry.
