Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, achieved a historic triumph at the AfroBasket Women’s Championship held at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda.

The path to victory was paved when Nigeria secured an impressive 79-48 win over hosts Rwanda in the semi-final game, a crucial step towards their fourth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title.

This outstanding achievement matched the record previously set by Senegal in 1974, 1977, 1979, and 1981.

In the grand finale, the West African giants faced the 2019 finalist, Senegal, in a highly-anticipated showdown. D’Tigress showcased their prowess on the court, emerging victorious with an 84-74 triumph.

This remarkable win secured Nigeria’s fourth consecutive championship, placing them in an elite position alongside Senegal as the only two African countries to achieve such a feat. Additionally, it marked their sixth title overall, adding to their previous victories in 2003, 2005, 2017, 2019, and 2021.

A moment of pride was added to the triumph as Coach Rena Wakama led D’Tigress to victory, becoming the first woman ever to win the tournament.

The team’s remarkable performance throughout the championship is reflected in their unbeaten record, boasting an impressive 24-0 run in the AfroBasket.

D’Tigress has not tasted defeat in over seven years, solidifying its status as a dominant force in African women’s basketball.

In the third-placed game, the hosts Rwanda faced off against Mali, but the resilient Rwandan team succumbed to a defeat with a score of 89-51.

Nigeria’s victory in the AfroBasket Women’s Championship cements its position as a basketball powerhouse in Africa, showcasing its talent, determination, and team spirit.

D’Tigress’ achievement will undoubtedly be celebrated by basketball fans across the nation and the African continent, as they continue to make their mark in women’s basketball history.
