D’Tigress Make History with Landmark Victory Over Australia at 2024 Paris Olympics

Nigeria’s female basketball team, D’Tigress, has made history at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris by securing their first Olympic victory in two decades. The team defeated Australia’s Opals 75-62 in a gripping match at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium.

This win is significant as it marks Nigeria’s first Olympic basketball victory since their 68-64 triumph over South Korea in the Athens 2004 Games. The D’Tigress, initially underestimated, demonstrated resilience after a slow start, winning the first quarter 18-17. They dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Opals 23-11 and establishing a substantial lead.

Despite a strong comeback from Australia in the third quarter, where they won 19-10, Nigeria responded with a decisive fourth quarter, winning 24-15. Ezinne Kalu was instrumental in the victory, leading with 19 points, five rebounds, and five assists.

A pivotal moment came with Nigeria’s 11-0 run to end the first half, which gave them a 13-point advantage. Although the Opals narrowed the gap in the final period, Amy Okonkwo delivered a crucial three-pointer to secure the win. Nigeria also set records with nine three-pointers and 15 steals, matching their Olympic best.

“This victory feels incredible. We faced challenges but remained united and fought through adversity,” said forward Amy Okonkwo.
