Elon Musk says Tesla is coming to India ‘as soon as humanly possible’
Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed his intention to invest in India “as soon as humanly possible” following a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York.
Musk emphasized Modi’s interest in India and the push for significant investments from Tesla, stating that they are determining the right timing for the move.
While Musk did not provide a specific timeline, he expressed confidence that Tesla will establish a presence in India and tentatively plans to visit the country next year.
Tesla’s entry into the Indian market has faced delays due to negotiations regarding lower import duties with the local government, which has requested local manufacturing before considering tax breaks.
Musk described his meeting with Modi as “fantastic” and expressed excitement about the future of India, highlighting Modi’s openness and support for companies while ensuring benefits for India.
Tesla currently operates a gigafactory in Shanghai, China, which accounts for a significant portion of the company’s global deliveries and manufacturing.
In recent discussions, Musk mentioned the possibility of choosing India as a location for a new Tesla factory, aligning with China and India’s efforts to attract investment and boost the electric vehicle industry.
China recently announced an extension of tax breaks for consumers purchasing new energy vehicles (NEVs) until 2027, aiming to stimulate sales and production in the country’s thriving EV market.
During his visit to China, Musk met government officials to discuss EV development and Tesla’s operations, while also visiting the Shanghai gigafactory and expressing appreciation for the workers’ contributions.
Musk received encouragement from the Communist Party chief of Shanghai to increase investment and operations and introduce new products, technologies, and services to the city.
