England win Euro 2022 final after beating Germany

England Defeat Germany to Win First Women’s Major Trophy

England has created history by winning its first major women’s tournament in a dramatic Euro 2022 final against 8-time champions, Germany at Wembley.

Goals from Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly brought a major trophy home for the first time since 1966.

Sarina Wiegman’s side started the final brightly and looked to put pressure on Germany from the outset, with two opportunities inside the first ten minutes.

Germany pushed back in the second half and looked the more dangerous side until substitutions gave England a renewed sense of purpose.

Chloe Kelly came on as a substitute and fired home a loose ball from a corner to send a raucous record crowd of 87,192 into a frenzy with 10 minutes of extra time to go.

She waited for confirmation of the goal before taking off her shirt and waving it around her head, while being lifted by her team-mates in a moment of pure elation.

On a monumental day in the history of English football, Sarina Wiegman’s side were bullied by a strong German team but they not only put up a formidable resistance but went on to emerge victorious.

Ella Toone had earlier come off the bench to score the opener in normal time before Germany’s Lina Magull set up a nervous ending with an equaliser in the 79th minute.

There were scenes of jubilation in the stands and an outpouring of emotion by players on the pitch at full-time as the magnitude of their achievement began to sink in.
