FIFA Warns High Train Fares Could Disrupt World Cup Experience

FIFA has raised concerns over steep transportation costs for fans attending matches at the 2026 World Cup, warning that the pricing could negatively affect both turnout and the overall tournament experience.

The issue centres on train fares for journeys between New York and MetLife Stadium, where tickets have reportedly climbed to $150 (£111) for a trip lasting about 30 minutes. The stadium is set to host multiple matches, including the final.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill criticised the situation, arguing that FIFA should help cover transportation costs for supporters. She also pointed out that there are no discounted fares for children or elderly passengers, while alternative shuttle services cost around $80.

In response, FIFA’s chief operating officer for the tournament, Heimo Schirgi, acknowledged the concern but said the pricing model could have wider consequences beyond affordability.

He warned that higher fares might push fans toward private transport, increasing congestion, causing delays, and ultimately affecting the smooth running of match days.

FIFA maintains that its priority is to ensure efficient mobility for fans and a seamless event experience, stressing that transportation challenges could undermine both the economic benefits and long-term legacy of hosting the tournament.

The governing body also rejected calls to subsidise transport, describing such demands as unusual for major global events. It emphasised that while the tournament is expected to generate significant revenue, those funds are reinvested into football development worldwide.

The debate highlights growing concerns about accessibility and logistics ahead of the 2026 World Cup, particularly in host cities where infrastructure and pricing could shape the fan experience as much as the matches themselves.
