In a sombre announcement on Sunday afternoon, the family of Terry Venables confirmed the passing of the iconic football figure at the age of 80. Venables, renowned for his role in managing England and steering the Three Lions to the semi-finals at Euro 1996, left an indelible mark on the football world.

Venables’ influence extended beyond his managerial prowess; he served as a player and manager at Tottenham. In honour of his legacy, a minute’s applause is scheduled to precede Tottenham’s match against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The family’s statement, released on Sunday afternoon, expressed profound grief: “We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness. We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who we were so lucky to have had in our lives.”

Venables’ managerial journey encompassed significant stints with Crystal Palace, Queens Park Rangers, Barcelona, and Tottenham. Richard Bevan, Chief Executive of the League Managers Association, conveyed condolences, stating, “The LMA is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of LMA member and former LMA President Terry Venables. Our thoughts are very much with Yvette and all of Terry’s family at this time.”

Tottenham held a special place in Venables’ career, where he secured the FA Cup both as a player in 1967 and as a manager in 1991. With over 500 appearances for the club, Venables left an indelible mark on Tottenham’s football history.

Venturing beyond English football, Venables achieved success at Barcelona, clinching a La Liga title in 1985 and the Copa de Liga a year later. His return to Spurs saw another FA Cup victory, cementing his status as a revered figure in football management.

Taking the helm as England’s manager in 1994, Venables led the team to the Euro 96 semi-finals, marking a memorable chapter in the nation’s football narrative. His managerial journey extended to Australia, Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough, and Leeds, contributing to the sport’s rich tapestry.

In 2006, Venables returned to the Three Lions coaching set-up, serving as Steve McClaren’s assistant, emphasizing his enduring impact on the English football landscape.

As tributes pour in, Terry Venables’ legacy remains etched in the annals of football history, leaving an indomitable imprint on the teams he managed and the players he inspired.
