Fuel Scarcity: Retailers Ignoring Over 500 Million Litres of Fuel From our Refinery – Dangote

Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Group, has attributed Nigeria’s ongoing fuel scarcity to retailers’ inaction, asserting that over 500 million litres of refined fuel remain uncollected in his refinery’s storage. Despite the refinery’s capacity to produce over 30 million litres daily, Dangote says distributors are failing to collect and deliver the fuel to the market.

Following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu and key oil and gas stakeholders on Tuesday, Dangote disclosed that the refinery is prepared to meet national demand. However, he emphasized that the company’s role is production, not retailing, and called on marketers to come forward to transport the fuel to alleviate street-level shortages.

“We are fully stocked with 500 million litres in our tanks. This could sustain the country for more than 12 days without additional imports,” Dangote told State House Correspondents. He added, “We’re ready to supply 30 million litres daily, increasing output if needed, but retailers need to pick up the stock.”

Addressing the impact of storage costs, Dangote noted that holding this volume is financially taxing, urging marketers to take action. He emphasized, “We are producers, not retailers. If they come to collect, queues will disappear. Our role is supply, and we’re committed to keeping our end of the bargain.”
