Geely Launches Second Batch of Satellites to Enhance Navigation for Autonomous Cars

Chinese automaker Geely Holding Group announced the successful launch of 11 low-earth orbit satellites, marking its second dispatch as part of an initiative to bolster navigation capabilities for autonomous vehicles. Launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province, Geely anticipates having 72 satellites in orbit by 2025, with eventual plans for a constellation of 240.

The satellite network, initiated with its first launch in June 2022, aims not only to provide high-precision positioning support for self-driving cars but also to serve various commercial functions, including connectivity with the consumer electronics sector. Geely’s satellites boast AI remote sensing capabilities, delivering clear high-resolution imaging with a precision range of 1-5 meters (3.2-16.4 feet).

While China’s satellite networks have traditionally been dominated by the military, private investment has been allowed in the country’s space industry since 2014. Geely’s venture into satellite technology aligns with Beijing’s broader objectives outlined in its five-year plan for 2021-2025, emphasizing the development of an integrated satellite network for communications, remote sensing, and navigation. The increasing involvement of commercial companies in China’s space sector reflects a growing trend, with various entities focusing on satellite production and small launch vehicles, including reusable rockets.
