Gmail to Phase Out SMS Codes, Introduce QR Authentication for Security

Google is set to replace SMS-based authentication codes with QR code verification for Gmail users, aiming to enhance security and reduce the risks associated with text-based authentication.

According to Forbes, an insider revealed that Gmail is working on transitioning away from SMS verification, which has long been used to confirm returning users and prevent fraudulent activities such as mass account creation for spam and malware distribution.

The decision comes amid growing concerns over the vulnerabilities of SMS-based authentication. Cybercriminals have increasingly exploited text message codes for phishing attacks and unauthorized access. Additionally, the rise of traffic-pumping scams – where bad actors manipulate networks to generate mass authentication messages for financial gain – has further exposed the weaknesses of SMS verification.

By shifting to QR-based authentication, Google aims to provide a more secure alternative that reduces reliance on mobile carrier security protocols and minimizes exposure to cyber threats.
