Perplexity Unveils AI-Powered Web Browser ‘Comet’
Perplexity AI, the artificial intelligence-driven search engine, has announced plans to launch its own web browser, Comet. The company revealed the upcoming project in a post on X, inviting users to join a waitlist ahead of its release.
“Just like Perplexity reinvented search, we’re also reinventing the browser,” a company spokesperson told TechCrunch, hinting at a new approach to web navigation powered by AI.
Perplexity has rapidly grown in the AI search space, handling over 100 million queries per week as of October 2024. The company has ambitious goals, with CEO Aravind Srinivas aiming to reach 100 million daily searches.
Backed by major investors such as SoftBank, Nvidia, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Perplexity secured $500 million in funding in December, tripling its valuation to $9 billion. This marks a significant leap from its $520 million valuation earlier in 2024.
Beyond search, Perplexity has expanded into AI-powered e-commerce with its Buy With Pro shopping assistant and visual search tool, Snap to Shop, which allows users to find products by uploading images.
The launch of Comet signals Perplexity’s growing ambition to compete in the broader AI-driven internet experience, potentially challenging established browsers with its innovative approach.
