‘I Was Promised $10,000’ – Canadian Lady Arrested by NDLEA for Drug Trafficking at Lagos Airport
A 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, has been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos for attempting to smuggle a large quantity of synthetic cannabis, known as ‘Canadian Loud’, into Nigeria.
According to an official statement released by Femi Babafemi, Director of Media & Advocacy at NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, Adrienne was apprehended during passenger clearance on a KLM flight from Canada on Thursday, 3rd October 2024. NDLEA operatives discovered 74 parcels of the potent drug, weighing 35.20 kilograms, concealed in two of her three bags during a joint inspection at the airport.
The suspect, who was visiting Nigeria for the first time, reportedly confessed that she had been recruited to smuggle the drugs through an online platform. She claimed she was promised $10,000 CAD for successfully delivering the consignment in Lagos. Adrienne explained that she accepted the offer because she needed the money to fund her master’s degree program in Canada.
In a separate operation, NDLEA officers at the Port Harcourt Ports in Rivers State intercepted a massive shipment of opioids, including over 13 million pills of various drugs such as Tramadol and Tapentadol, as well as 338,253 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup. The street value of the seized drugs is estimated at over ₦9 billion. The illicit cargo had arrived from India and was discovered during a thorough examination of three containers in collaboration with Nigerian Customs officials.

Additionally, NDLEA operatives at the Tincan seaport in Lagos seized another consignment of 100 parcels of ‘Canadian Loud’, weighing 50kg, on the same day. The drugs were hidden inside a container that also carried four imported vehicles from Canada. Based on credible intelligence, the agency traced the shipment to a warehouse in Ikorodu, where it was found concealed in one of the vehicles, a Toyota Sienna. A suspect, Abubakar Shuaibu Ibrahim, has been detained in connection with the discovery.
Further arrests were made across the country, including two suspects caught with large quantities of opioids in a commercial bus in Taraba and another suspect found with 80 blocks of cannabis hidden in bags of garri in Wukari.

Reacting to the series of arrests and drug seizures, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), praised the officers for their diligent efforts. He commended the work of the agency’s teams across Lagos, Rivers, Edo, and Taraba states for their success in intercepting the drugs and preventing their distribution.
