I Won’t Pay N18 Million Tax, Iyabo Ojo Tells Lagos Govt
Prominent Yoruba Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo takes a stand against the excessive tax levy imposed by the Lagos State Government. In a recent Instagram post, she expressed her refusal to pay the exorbitant amount of N18,640,092 issued by the Lagos Internal Revenue Service.
The actress questioned the methodology behind the frequent issuance of such tax levies and highlighted her lack of understanding regarding the calculation.
In a currently-deleted post, she wrote, “Jidesanwoolu @lagosstategovt, please, how do you people come up with these outrageous personal income taxes you send on a daily basis?
“After paying different types of taxes for one’s businesses, house & all…. you still come up with all this huge amount and give me 7 days to pay up, lol.”
She recounted her visit to the office of the LIRS to provide a detailed explanation of her earnings as a businesswoman, only to receive an outrageous tax bill from the government. Expressing her frustration, she raised concerns about the government’s contribution to improving the lives of its citizens, emphasizing that she has managed to raise her children and herself without any assistance from the government.
The actress emphasized the need for transparency in the tax system and criticized the government for demanding excessive amounts without providing adequate services in return.
“I have single-handedly raised my kids and so many others, plus myself without a single help from the government. Yet you feel so entitled to reap over 100 per cent from where you did not sow. Nothing is working right in this country, but yet you feel the need to take from where you have not sown,” she fumed.
She boldly stated that she would rather be arrested and have her business shut down than comply with the unfair levy.
The Lagos State Government had issued a tax demand of N18,640,092, citing a liability of N7,376,000 for the year 2022 and an outstanding liability of N11,264,092 for the 2021 income year.
