Jay-Z and Blue Ivy

Jay-Z Talks Fatherhood, Early Career, and Collaboration

Jay-Z, often hailed as the G.O.A.T. in Hip Hop, recently sat down with Gayle King for an exclusive CBS News interview inside his “Book of HOV” library exhibit.

In the first part of the interview, Jay-Z shared a lighthearted anecdote about his relationship with his eldest daughter, Blue Ivy. He humorously recounted how Blue Ivy initially resisted acknowledging her father’s coolness. Nevertheless, it seems that Jay-Z’s cool factor has been recognized by his daughter as she now seeks his fashion advice.

“Blue – she be fronting on me a little bit, but I catch her in the corner,” Jay-Z said. “Now she asks me if this is cool — her sneakers or whatever she’s wearing. She’s come back, but there was a time where she was like, ‘Daaaad!’ I was like, ‘I’m cool. I don’t what you’re saying! At your house, your parents are cool!”

The interview also delved into Jay-Z’s early career and the origins of his nickname, ‘One Take Hov.’ He explained that this moniker was earned during the era of recording to actual tape, where making mistakes wasn’t an option. Jay-Z shared, “So you can’t mess up because then you gotta go all the way back and you gotta cut the tape. That’s where the whole ‘One Take Hov’ came from because if you wanted to fly the chorus on this thing — you had to go to dinner. It took an engineer hours.”

Reflecting on his evolution, Jay-Z admitted that he’s come a long way from his earlier music videos. He spoke about working with legendary director Hype Williams and how his guarded nature at the time made it challenging to be coached for performances. He revealed, “That’s not even how I speak. So I don’t know if he could coach my performance, but he definitely coached the scene and everything around it.”

JAY-Z’s recent willingness to engage in interviews signals a more open and candid side of the artist, providing fans with a deeper glimpse into the man behind the music.
