Jaywon Apologises to Ayra Starr After Backlash Over Grammy Nomination Post
Nigerian singer Jaywon has issued a public apology to fellow artist Ayra Starr following accusations that he mocked her on social media for missing out on a Grammy nomination. The Grammy nominees for the 67th awards ceremony were recently revealed, with Ayra Starr not making the list despite a highly successful year.
Shortly after the announcement, Jaywon, who had previously been engaged in a public disagreement with Ayra Starr, posted a photo of himself posing with two Grammy awards. Many interpreted the post as a subtle jab directed at Starr, sparking criticism from fans who saw it as insensitive.
In response to the backlash, Jaywon clarified his intentions and expressed regret for any misunderstanding. He shared his respect for Ayra Starr’s talent, describing her as one of Africa’s top female vocalists. “If you see Ayra Starr, tell her I’m sorry she wasn’t nominated for this year’s Grammys. I’m a huge fan of her music, and I believe she’s one of the best female vocalists Africa has,” he wrote.
Jaywon emphasized that he does not believe in bringing others down, adding, “On this side, we don’t pull people down. We elevate, not just for today, but for the future.”
As a voting member of the Recording Academy, Jaywon’s apology also highlighted his commitment to supporting emerging talents like Ayra Starr in the African music scene.
