Legalising Marijuana, Greatest Mistake in U.S., Canada – Elton John

British music icon Sir Elton John has stirred fresh debate over marijuana legalisation in the United States and Canada, calling the policy “one of the greatest mistakes of all time.”

In a recent interview, the legendary singer, sober since 1990, expressed strong views on the drug, warning of its addictive nature and its link to more harmful substances. “It leads to other drugs. And when you’re stoned – and I’ve been stoned – you don’t think normally,” John remarked.

His comments address the broader trend of cannabis legalisation across North America. More than 20 U.S. states have legalised recreational marijuana, while a greater number allow its medical use. At the federal level, cannabis remains illegal, though efforts to reclassify it are underway. In Canada, recreational and medical marijuana have been fully legal since 2018.

Reflecting on his own struggles with addiction, John was candid about the toll drugs once took on his life and relationships. “You make terrible decisions on drugs. I wanted love so badly, I’d just take hostages,” he admitted. “It really upsets me, thinking back on how many people I probably hurt.”

John’s remarks arrive as he is celebrated as Time’s Icon of the Year, earning admiration from younger artists for his enduring influence. Dua Lipa, who collaborated with John on the hit Cold Heart, described performing alongside him as a “no-brainer,” while breakout star Chappell Roan hailed him as both mentor and inspiration, dubbing him “one of the original queens.”

Sharing advice John gave her during a creative struggle, Roan said: “He told me the songs will come. He thought he wouldn’t have ideas, but they were there. He just had to let them come to him. That’s a good reminder.”

Elton John’s views have reignited debate on marijuana’s place in society, particularly as North America continues to grapple with shifting attitudes, health concerns, and evolving policies around its use.
