Lewandowski to Wear Ukraine’s Colours at the World Cup

Barcelona striker, Robert Lewandowski will wear the colours of Ukraine on the captain’s armband of the Polish national team at the World Cup in Qatar 2022.

The striker met on Tuesday at the National Stadium in Warsaw with the legendary former Ukrainian player Andriy Shevchenko, who is currently an ambassador for Laureus, who presented him with a yellow and blue captain’s armband to wear at the tournament.

“I will wear the Ukrainian colours at the World Cup. As a player and as a man, I support peace and I think these symbolic gestures are important,” said Lewandowski, who immediately after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was one of those who lobbied hardest for the postponement of the match between his national team and Russia.

The Polish striker has previously worn an armband in Ukrainian colours as captain of his former club Bayern Munich.

An Armband For Peace

“For me, the captain’s armband is a symbol of leadership, strength and passion for your country. I want to pass this armband to Robert to thank him for his support, his voice and his platform to support my country and call for peace,” said Shevchenko.
