Naomi Campbell Was ‘Killing’ Herself With Drugs

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has candidly revealed her past struggles with drugs and alcohol, acknowledging that she was “killing” herself with these substances. In an interview for the new Apple TV+ docuseries ‘The Supermodels,’ the 53-year-old discussed her battles with addiction, attributing them to unresolved grief and pain from various life experiences.

Campbell acknowledged that grief had been a complex part of her life, often remaining hidden until it eventually overwhelmed her. She confessed to using drugs and alcohol as a way to cope with her feelings of grief and abandonment, stemming from her childhood and the death of her close friend, Gianni Versace, who was tragically shot dead in 1997.

Describing her experience, Campbell shared, “When I started using, that was one of the things I tried to cover up, was grief. Addiction is such a… it’s just a b* thing, it really is. You think, ‘Oh, it’s gonna heal that wound.’ It doesn’t. It can cause such huge fear and anxiety. So I got really angry… When you try to cover something up, your feelings… You spoke about abandonment. I tried to cover that with something. You can’t cover it. I was killing myself. It was very hurtful.”

In 1999, Naomi Campbell sought help by entering rehab after collapsing during a photoshoot. She described the experience as “scary” but emphasized its importance in addressing her problems. Campbell admitted that confronting her issues took courage and self-awareness.

Despite her past struggles, Campbell believes she has made significant progress in managing her anger and coping with her emotions. While acknowledging that anger still surfaces at times, she stated, “I just now have the tools on how to deal with it now when it comes up. I have to think of something outside of myself. Something greater than myself.”

Campbell expressed her willingness to support and help anyone facing similar challenges, emphasizing her loyalty to the people she loves. Her openness about her struggles serves as a reminder that even those in the public eye can face personal battles and seek healing and recovery.
