Nigeria’s Biggest Filmmakers are All Yoruba – Chude Jideonwo Claims

Media personality Chude Jideonwo has sparked a conversation about the dominance of Yoruba filmmakers in Nigeria’s movie industry, asserting that the country’s biggest names in filmmaking are predominantly from the Yoruba ethnic group. In a recent Instagram post, Jideonwo highlighted well-known filmmakers such as Kemi Adetiba, Toyin Abraham, Funke Akindele, Mo Abudu, Kunle Afolayan, and Femi Adebayo as examples of Yoruba professionals leading the industry.

He pointed out that films by Yoruba filmmakers have gained significant global recognition, often appearing on major streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon, while Hausa and Igbo-language films remain nearly absent from these platforms.

Jideonwo stated, “The biggest filmmakers in Nigeria now are all Yorubas… Most of the mainstream, big cinema, and streaming movies are all by Yoruba people.” He argued that the Yoruba filmmaking culture has not only merged with the country’s broader film industry but also led the way in producing major cultural hits.

He further questioned the representation of Hausa and Igbo films on international platforms, noting that Genevieve Nnaji’s Lionheart was one of the few exceptions. However, he emphasized that Yoruba films continue to dominate the global streaming space.
