Nollywood Producers Prioritise Beauty Over Talent – Actress Shine Rosman
Nollywood actress Shine Rosman has criticised the Nigerian movie industry for allegedly placing more importance on physical appearance than acting talent when casting actresses.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Baaj and Paul podcast, Rosman claimed that many filmmakers in Nollywood now focus more on beauty standards than actual performance skills.
According to her, the growing obsession with physical appearance is gradually affecting the quality of talent within the industry.
She alleged that the pressure to meet beauty expectations has pushed some actresses into undergoing cosmetic procedures to enhance their bodies and appearance.
“Most filmmakers in Nollywood prioritise beauty over talent,” she said, adding that although some directors still value acting ability above all else, many producers now favour physical attractiveness during casting decisions.
Rosman also argued that beauty has become overly glorified not only in Nollywood but in Nigerian society generally, leading to situations where people are denied opportunities because they do not fit certain appearance standards.
The actress further claimed that some individuals who lack acting qualifications are still able to secure movie roles because of their looks.
She called on filmmakers and other industry stakeholders to return to prioritising talent and professionalism in order to preserve the future and quality of the Nigerian film industry.
