Patti LaBelle Powers Through Lyric Mishap During Tina Turner Tribute at BET Awards: ‘I’m Trying Y’all’

The BET Awards, known as hip-hop’s biggest night, paid tribute to rock icon Tina Turner through a performance by Patti LaBelle. LaBelle, dressed in a shimmery black fringe dress, delivered a lively rendition of Turner’s classic “The Best.”

During the performance, LaBelle faced a technical issue with the teleprompter, causing her to stumble on some of the song’s lyrics. She improvised briefly and acknowledged the challenge, telling the studio audience, “I’m trying, y’all.”

Patti LaBelle joined an impressive lineup including Bia, Coi Leray, Cutty Ranks, Fat Joe, Soulja Boy, and The Sugarhill Gang for a star-studded tribute to hip-hop’s significant moments, curated by Kid Capri, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Tina Turner passed away at her home in Switzerland in May after a prolonged illness. Her life was marked by musical greatness and personal trauma, including escaping an abusive relationship with her first husband and musical mentor, Ike Turner, to achieve pop stardom in the ’80s with hits like “What’s Love Got to Do With It.”

Known for her captivating stage presence and influential dance moves, Turner’s touring schedule was relentless, with her “Private Dancer” tour in 1984 comprising 180 dates, followed by numerous successful tours in arenas and stadiums worldwide.

Turner’s talents extended beyond music, as she made appearances in films such as “Tommy” (1975) and starred alongside Mel Gibson in “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” (1985). Her impact on the music and entertainment industry remains immeasurable.
