PBS Masterpiece to Air New ‘Count of Monte Cristo’ TV Series in 2026

A fresh adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo, the timeless tale of betrayal and revenge by Alexandre Dumas, is set to debut on PBS Masterpiece in 2026.

The eight-part series, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Bille August, brings to life the story of Edmond Dantès, a man wrongly imprisoned who escapes, discovers a hidden treasure, and meticulously seeks vengeance against those who betrayed him.

Filmed across Paris, Rome, Torino, and Malta, the production boasts a notable international cast. Jeremy Irons stars as Abbé Faria, with Ana Girardot playing Mercédès. Other cast members include Mikkel Boe Følsgaard as Gérard de Villefort, Blake Ritson as Danglars, Karla-Simone Spence as Haydée, Nicolas Maupas as Albert De Morcerf, Lino Guanciale as Vampa, Michele Riondino as Jacopo, and Gabriella Pession as Hermine.

The series premiered at the 19th Rome Film Festival in October 2024 and has already aired in Switzerland, Sweden, and Italy. It is produced by Palomar and DEMD Productions – subsidiaries of Mediawan – and distributed globally by Mediawan Rights. North American distribution is being handled in partnership with CAA, with additional participation from Entourage Ventures.

While no exact release date has been confirmed for the U.S. premiere, PBS has confirmed that The Count of Monte Cristo will air sometime in 2026.
