“Prayers Alone Won’t Build Roads or Educate Children,” Jesse Jagz Tells Nigerians

Nigerian rapper Jesse Jagz has called on Nigerians to rethink their approach to religion, expressing his views on the importance of combining faith with action to address societal needs. Speaking on the “Big Talk” podcast, Jagz critiqued both traditional and foreign religious practices, suggesting that reliance on rituals and prayer alone cannot provide essential services like infrastructure and education.

Reflecting on African traditional practices, he commented, “Our gods are drunk on alcohol and meat; they are obese and diabetic. They can’t help us do anything,” noting that worship without practical efforts does little to drive progress. He cited the cost of gin during the slavery era as an example, suggesting that rituals have historically had high costs yet yield little change.

Jagz also argued against the idea of praying for miracles without working towards tangible solutions. “Prayers do not build roads or buy books for children. We have forgotten humanity,” he emphasized, urging Nigerians to take a proactive role in solving social issues.
