Selena Gomez Reflects on Past Self-Criticism, Advocates Kindness

During a candid discussion at the SXSW panel titled ‘Mindfulness Over Perfection: Getting Real On Mental Health’, actress Selena Gomez opened up about her past struggles with self-criticism and the journey towards self-compassion.

Recalling her earlier years and the critical views she held of herself, Gomez admitted feeling “sick” when reflecting on her past mindset. She expressed regret over the harshness she directed towards herself and acknowledged the importance of speaking to oneself with kindness.

Gomez’s introspection was influenced by her 2022 documentary ‘My Mind and Me’, which chronicled her six-year journey grappling with confidence issues, suicidal thoughts, bipolar disorder diagnosis, and burnout. She confessed that initially, she didn’t fully grasp the significance of self-compassion depicted in the film.

Inspired by the film ‘Girl, Interrupted’, Gomez engaged in a conversation with her mother, Mandy Teefey, about the complexities of the entertainment industry and her sense of not fitting in. This dialogue spurred her towards greater openness about her struggles.

Reflecting on her journey, Gomez emphasized the need for individuals to address their mental health challenges at their own pace. She highlighted the significance of personal readiness in seeking help and acknowledged the support of those who cared about her during her journey towards healing.

Now, Gomez believes she is in a better place emotionally, underscoring the importance of self-compassion and the gradual process of self-discovery and growth.
