Sex Trafficking Case: P. Diddy Rejects U.S. Government’s Plea Deal
American music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs has declined a plea deal offered by U.S. federal prosecutors, opting instead to face trial on serious charges including sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and prostitution.
The rapper and entrepreneur appeared in court on Thursday where Judge Arun Subramanian directly asked if he was rejecting the plea bargain that could have reduced his potential prison sentence. “Yes, I do, Your Honour,” Combs replied.
Rejecting the deal means Combs will now proceed to trial, with jury selection scheduled to begin on Monday. Prosecutors allege that Combs orchestrated a scheme involving coercion and exploitation, reportedly forcing women into extended sexual encounters he allegedly termed “freak-offs.”
Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurene Comey noted that the plea deal would have led to a significantly lighter sentence. However, a conviction on all counts could result in a prison term that amounts to life behind bars.
Dressed in a beige jail-issued uniform, Combs was seen smiling and greeting his legal team warmly during the court appearance, even exchanging a fist bump with attorney Teny Geragos.
Geragos raised concerns over remarks made by civil rights attorney Lisa Bloom – who represents at least two of Combs’ accusers – in a documentary that could influence public perception. “We’re concerned with her behaviour here,” he told the court.
In response, Judge Subramanian affirmed that all parties and witnesses involved would be reminded of professional conduct rules to ensure Combs receives a fair trial.
The high-profile case continues to draw widespread attention, with the outcome likely to have significant legal and reputational implications for the hip-hop mogul.
