Sha’Carri Richardson Makes History, Wins World Athletics 100 Meter Gold (Watch Race)

In an astonishing turn of events at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Sha’Carri Richardson from the United States defied expectations and clinched victory in the women’s 100 meters world title, leaving Jamaica’s pre-race favourites astounded.

Executing an unexpected upset, Richardson dashed Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s aspirations of claiming her sixth women’s world 100m title. She surged to the finish line in a championship record time of 10.65 seconds, all while starting from the challenging lane nine during the finals on Monday.

This achievement marked a remarkable achievement for Richardson and secured a 100m double victory for the United States, following Noah Lyles’ triumph in the men’s event.

Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson and the experienced Fraser-Pryce secured the silver and bronze medals, clocking in at 10.72 seconds and 10.77 seconds respectively, adding to the exhilarating race on the third day of competition in the Hungarian capital.

The 23-year-old Richardson’s journey to this triumph has been marked by challenges. She was disqualified from the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021 due to testing positive for marijuana. Additionally, her hopes for a medal at last year’s world championships in Eugene, Oregon were dashed as she failed to qualify during the US trials.

Reflecting on her victory, Richardson expressed her triumphant sentiment, saying, “I’m here. I’m the champion. I told you all. I’m not back, I’m better!” Richardson’s unique style, characterized by her vibrant hair colour changes and boldly painted nails, has drawn comparisons to the late Florence Griffith Joyner.

Fraser-Pryce, who held the reigning champion title, shared her gratitude for securing the bronze medal after a challenging season marked by a knee injury.
