Sleeping Dogs Movie Makes Major Progress as First Script Draft Is Completed

The long-awaited Sleeping Dogs film adaptation has taken a significant step forward, as actor and producer Simu Liu confirmed that the first script draft is complete.

Based on the 2012 video game of the same name, Sleeping Dogs follows Wei Shen, an undercover police officer infiltrating the Hong Kong underworld. The open-world action game became a cult favorite for its gripping story, martial arts combat, and parkour-inspired gameplay, even though its commercial performance fell short of expectations.

Liu, best known for his role as Shang-Chi in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, shared the update on X (formerly Twitter), posting a photo of his dog alongside another showing the completed Sleeping Dogs script. The writer’s name was redacted, sparking speculation about who may be attached to the project.

The actor’s announcement reassures fans who have long awaited movement on the film, which had previously been linked to Donnie Yen but never materialized. Liu, who is also serving as a producer, has repeatedly expressed enthusiasm for bringing the story to life.

With the script now reportedly in the review phase, the Sleeping Dogs movie appears to be one step closer to entering production – offering fans hope that Wei Shen’s story will soon make its long-awaited leap from console to cinema.
