Sony Exec Discusses PS5 Superiority Over PCs and Holiday Strategy, Aiming for 25 Million Unit Sales

In a recent interview, Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President of Platform Experience at Sony Interactive Entertainment, shared insights into Sony’s holiday season strategy and the PlayStation 5’s position in the gaming landscape.

Sony is gearing up for a robust holiday season, anticipating the PlayStation 5 to potentially become its most successful console to date. With inventory challenges behind them, the company aims to sell a total of 25 million units in the fiscal year ending March 2024.

Nishino addressed the expanding PlayStation 5 ecosystem, highlighting the introduction of the handheld PlayStation Portal and the sleeker PS5 Slim, featuring enhanced storage and design refinements. Sony anticipates strong sales, particularly for the PS5 Slim, during the upcoming holiday season.

In the interview, Nishino asserted the superiority of the PS5 over PCs for gaming, emphasizing its simplicity and ease of setup. While acknowledging the potential for AAA console releases on PC, he underscored the convenience of the PS5 for players focused solely on gaming without delving into technical details.

Despite acknowledging that building a gaming PC could be rewarding for hardware enthusiasts, Nishino suggested that the PS5 offers a more straightforward and cost-effective option, especially when compared to pre-built PCs.

Regarding the potential for a PS5 Pro refresh, Nishino expressed Sony’s current lack of concern about performance, emphasizing that games are only beginning to harness the capabilities of the PS5. While rumours of a more powerful PS5 Pro circulate, logistical challenges and the current success of the PS5 make such a move unlikely in the near future.

Nishino also highlighted Sony’s efforts to ensure a steady supply of the 2,000 parts required to manufacture a PS5. Improving availability and expanding the PlayStation ecosystem are top priorities for Sony, particularly in the aftermath of Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The company plans to bolster its exclusive titles and explore TV adaptations to attract more users to the PlayStation platform.

As the year-end sales season approaches, Sony aims to make a significant impact with a combination of compelling content and hardware, including peripherals, reinforcing its commitment to dominating the gaming market.
