FIFA Takes Decision on Spanish FA President

In a decisive move, FIFA, the international governing body of football, has taken action regarding the conduct of Luis Rubiales, the President of the Spanish Football Association (RFEF), due to his controversial kissing incident involving footballer Jenni Hermoso.

FIFA issued an official statement on its website to announce the suspension of Luis Rubiales with immediate effect, in light of his actions with Jenni Hermoso. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Jorge Ivan Palacio from Colombia, invoked its authority as per article 51 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) to provisionally suspend Mr. Rubiales from all football-related activities, both at national and international levels.

The statement indicated that the suspension, effective immediately, will extend for an initial period of 90 days. This suspension follows the commencement of disciplinary proceedings against Luis Rubiales on Thursday, August 24.

The controversy arose from Rubiales’s public display of affection toward Jenni Hermoso, characterized by a kiss on the lips, during the celebratory event following Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup. This act of affection garnered criticism, and Rubiales subsequently faced calls for his resignation.

FIFA conveyed its stance in the statement, affirming its commitment to maintaining the integrity of all individuals and condemning behaviour contrary to this principle. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has informed Mr. Rubiales, the RFEF, and UEFA of its decision and stressed that further details regarding the disciplinary proceedings will be disclosed after a final verdict is reached.

In the aftermath of the incident, Luis Rubiales faced additional backlash for his behaviour during the celebrations. He engaged in similar displays of affection with other Spain national team members and performed gestures that were deemed inappropriate, including grabbing his crotch in front of Queen Letizia of Spain and her teenage daughter.

Despite calls for his resignation, Rubiales refused to step down during a press conference held on Friday. Instead, he emphatically asserted, “I will not resign,” echoing his determination to maintain his position as the head of the Spanish Football Association.

As part of the suspension’s terms, Rubiales has been directed to abstain from attempting any form of communication with Jennifer Hermoso or her close circle through himself or intermediaries. FIFA’s decisive action underscores its commitment to preserving the dignity and reputation of the sport and its participants.
