Spanish FA President Denies Resignation Amid Controversy Over Post-Match Kiss

Luis Rubiales, the President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), has vehemently refused to step down from his position amidst a brewing controversy following a post-match kiss. Rubiales has been at the centre of a storm after kissing Jenni Hermoso, a forward of the Spanish Women’s World Cup-winning team, during the medal ceremony following their triumph over England in Sydney.

The incident has sparked discussions about appropriateness and respect in the sporting world. Initially, Rubiales dismissed his critics as “idiots,” but he later issued an apology on Monday for his actions. Many anticipated that the mounting pressure and criticism would force him to resign.

However, Rubiales took an unexpected turn during an extensive address at an emergency general assembly of the Spanish Football Federation on Friday. Defying expectations, he emphatically declared, “I will not resign,” repeatedly.

The unexpected statement came after FIFA launched an investigation into his conduct, considering possible violations of the FIFA disciplinary code’s principles of fair play and offensive behaviour.

Rubiales, who had also gestured crudely during the World Cup celebrations, addressed the issue during his speech, stating, “I apologize for my mistakes. I’m going to continue fighting as my parents and my coaches taught me. Those who know me, know that we are going to get to the end.”

His remarks, delivered to a supportive crowd, received applause and a standing ovation. Notably, Spain Women’s head coach Jorge Vilda and the men’s head coach, Luis de la Fuente, were among those who stood up.

Despite Rubiales’ defiance, the Spanish players’ union (AFE) called for his dismissal, asserting that he “should not continue for one more minute” as the head of the Spanish FA. They criticized his attempt to justify his actions and highlighted the negative impact on the image of Spanish sport both nationally and internationally.

The controversy has rippled beyond the footballing sphere, with influential voices expressing disappointment. Real Betis striker Borja Iglesias announced he would not play for the national team again until there is a change in attitude. He emphasized that Rubiales’ actions should not go unpunished.

As the debate continues, the Spanish football community remains divided on the matter, with sentiments ranging from condemnation to support. The clash of perspectives highlights broader discussions about gender equality, respect, and leadership within the sports industry.
