A 2021 Chevrolet Malibu sedan

The Chevy Malibu, the Brand’s Last Sedan, Will End Production

General Motors, the parent company of Chevrolet, has announced the cessation of production for the Chevrolet Malibu sedan, marking the end of an era for the brand’s sedan offerings. The decision comes as the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas, where the Malibu is manufactured, undergoes reconfiguration to accommodate the production of the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt EV.

With the discontinuation of the Malibu, Chevrolet’s product lineup in the United States will now primarily consist of trucks, SUVs, and the Corvette sports car. This move follows a trend in the automotive industry, with rival automakers like Ford also phasing out sedan models in favour of prioritizing larger vehicles and electric options.

According to industry data from Cox Automotive, traditional cars, excluding SUVs, trucks, and vans, account for less than 20% of total auto sales in the United States. Despite its longstanding presence in the market, the Malibu faced stiff competition from popular models like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, both of which have maintained strong sales figures.

Last year, the Malibu saw a sales increase of 13%, with over 130,000 units sold, primarily to fleet operators such as rental car companies. However, fleet sales constituted a significant portion of overall Malibu sales, highlighting a shift in consumer preferences towards larger vehicles.

The Malibu, which traces its origins back to the 1960s as a variant of the Chevrolet Chevelle, has undergone several iterations over the years. Despite a brief hiatus in production during the 1980s, the Malibu was reintroduced in 1997 and has remained in production since then.

While Malibu’s discontinuation marks the end of an era for Chevrolet sedans, the brand remains committed to meeting evolving consumer demands and advancing its lineup of electric and sustainable vehicles. As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, Chevrolet aims to position itself as a leader in innovation and mobility solutions for the future.
