TikTok Owner ByteDance is Testing an Instagram Competitor Called Whee

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is venturing into the realm of social media once again with the testing of its latest app, “Whee.” This move comes amidst ongoing regulatory scrutiny and potential bans on TikTok in various countries.

Whee, described by many as a direct competitor to Instagram, offers a private photo-sharing experience akin to Meta’s network. Users can share photos exclusively with friends, emphasizing connections with people they know rather than engaging with strangers online.

The app, currently in testing, is available on Google’s Play Store in select countries such as Australia, Turkey, Thailand, and Pakistan. Notably absent from the list is the US, suggesting a deliberate regional rollout strategy possibly reinforced by strong VPN blocking measures.

Whee’s interface bears striking similarities to Instagram, featuring tabs for the camera, feed, messages, and a notification center reminiscent of its established counterpart. However, the app diverges from TikTok’s model by focusing on intimate, private sharing rather than viral content.
