Timbaland Slammed for Trying to ‘Remake’ Aaliyah With ‘Nonsense Singer’ Anna Margo

Popular music producer Timbaland, known for his impressive career crafting hits for artists like Missy Elliott, Nelly Furtado, and Justin Timberlake, has recently released a new song, “My Way,” in collaboration with L.A.-based singer-songwriter Anna Margo. While Timbaland has a history of shaping the sounds of major music talents, this release has sparked mixed reactions, particularly from Aaliyah’s devoted fans.

Anna Margo’s gentle vocals gracefully complement the beat as she sings, “You wanna find out if I’m what I seem, what I’m like now…,” drawing listeners into the melody.

However, the song hasn’t been universally well-received, and some listeners have criticized it for attempting to replicate the magic Timbaland created with Aaliyah. Aaliyah, a beloved R&B icon, had a distinct sound crafted by Timbaland during her career.

In the comments section of a post by Neighborhood Talk featuring the song, one user expressed their thoughts, saying, “Tim I know you miss Aaliyah but stop trying to remake her. You’ve been giving her songs to anybody. Just stop. Let it go.” Another commented, “Not him wasting this beat on this nonsense singer.”

There was also criticism regarding the perceived similarities to Ginuwine’s 1999 track “Final Warning,” suggesting that the beat might not be suited for this song.

Nevertheless, some listeners defended Timbaland, noting that he was an integral part of creating the Aaliyah sound. One user wrote, “Y’all keep saying ‘it’s giving Aaliyah vibes,’ but Timbaland WAS the Aaliyah vibe. What do you expect?” Another user pointed out, “Why do y’all keep saying he’s trying to remake Aaliyah??? He just used a sample of his own beat from a song he produced for her…”

While Timbaland may face criticism for “My Way,” he is not averse to appreciating and supporting other artists. Recently, during an appearance on 99 JAMZ in Miami, he expressed his desire for more album releases from artists of his generation. He particularly hyped up the upcoming album by Rick Ross and Meek Mill, referring to it as a “classic” and emphasizing the importance of staying true to one’s unique style in the ever-evolving music industry. Timbaland’s insight into the music world continues to influence and shape the industry.
