Tobi Amusan Named Nigeria’s Flagbearer for 2024 Paris Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony
World 100m hurdles record-holder Tobi Amusan has been chosen to lead the Nigerian delegation at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris on Friday, July 26. The announcement was made by the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Sport on Tuesday morning.
Amusan’s selection marks the first time in two decades that a track and field athlete will carry the Nigerian flag at the Olympics, following Mary Onyali’s role at the Athens 2004 Games. In May, Amusan set a new world record of 12.40 seconds in the 100m hurdles at the 2024 Jamaica Athletics Invitational, defeating reigning world champion Danielle Williams of Jamaica and American Christina Clemens.
In addition to Amusan’s role, the NOC has appointed badminton player Anuoluwapo Opeyori as Nigeria’s general team captain for the Paris Olympics. Opeyori, who has represented Nigeria since 2017, won the singles titles at both the African Championships and the African Games in 2019 and also competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
As the general team captain, Opeyori will lead and guide the Nigerian contingent in Paris, drawing on his extensive international experience to inspire his teammates to excel.
