Transactions Above N500,000 Can Lead to Trouble – Police Warn POS Operators

The Delta State Police Command has issued a strict warning to Point of Sale (POS) operators, cautioning them against processing transactions exceeding N500,000, due to the risk of being linked to criminal activities, particularly kidnapping.

Speaking on Thursday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, emphasized that engaging in large transactions could make operators unwitting accomplices in crimes. He referenced a recent case where a POS operator accepted a N4,000,000 ransom payment from kidnappers, earning a small profit of N40,000 but facing significant legal consequences.

“Don’t allow yourself to become a tool for kidnappers to collect ransom. Such transactions will be traced back to you,” Edafe warned, advising operators to avoid large transactions to steer clear of trouble.

He further urged operators to remain vigilant and report any suspicious transactions to law enforcement, stressing the importance of compliance with federal regulations that set limits on transaction amounts to prevent criminal misuse.

“Even though you may argue that it’s just business, you risk serious legal consequences, including imprisonment, before your case is resolved,” Edafe added.

The warning highlights the increasing need for POS operators to practice due diligence and stay within legal boundaries to avoid involvement in unlawful activities
