UEFA Postpones Soccer Matches in Israel Due to Ongoing Conflict
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has made the decision to postpone all scheduled matches in Israel due to the ongoing conflict in the country. In an official statement, UEFA addressed the security situation in Israel and announced the postponement of upcoming matches. New dates for these fixtures will be confirmed at a later time.
Among the affected matches is the Euro 2024 qualifier between Israel and Switzerland, originally set for Thursday. Additionally, Israel’s Euro Under-21 championship matches against Estonia and Germany have been postponed. A mini-tournament that was supposed to take place from October 10 to 17, featuring Under-17 teams from Israel, Belgium, Gibraltar, and Wales, has also been affected by the decision.
Furthermore, an upcoming Euro 2024 qualifying match between Israel and Kosovo, initially scheduled for October 15, may face postponement pending further evaluation. UEFA stated that they will closely monitor the evolving situation and maintain communication with all involved teams before determining new dates and potential changes to other upcoming fixtures.
This announcement comes as Israel continues to experience ongoing conflict, with recent developments involving an unexpected breach of the border by Hamas fighters from Gaza. Israel has responded with airstrikes and formally declared war on Hamas. The situation remains fluid, and the future of this chapter in the long-standing conflict remains uncertain. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has predicted a “long and difficult war,” while military officials have hinted at potential actions, including regaining full control of Gaza for the first time since Israel’s withdrawal in 2005.
Reports indicate a rising death toll in Israel, with over 700 casualties reported, and more than 400 Palestinians have lost their lives, according to Gaza’s health ministry. Disturbing videos have surfaced, depicting the grim realities on the ground, including an attack on a music festival resulting in at least 250 casualties. Hamas has also claimed the capture of approximately 100 Israeli hostages, including women and children, further escalating tensions in the region.
