Whoopi Goldberg Brands ‘American Idol’ the Beginning of Society’s ‘Downfall’

Whoopi Goldberg, the 67-year-old actress known for her roles in movies like ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’, recently expressed her opinion about “American Idol,” referring to it as the start of society’s “downfall.”

During a conversation with her co-hosts on ‘The View,’ Goldberg discussed a Netflix documentary on the final days of Anna Nicole Smith’s life, and it led her to the observation that people enjoy being judgmental.

Goldberg pointed out the prevalence of this trend in reality TV shows such as ‘Basketball Wives’ and the various iterations of ‘Housewives’ on Bravo.

She believes that these shows create a perception that one is doing something wrong by simply living their life. People watch these shows because it makes them feel better about themselves, and she believes that as a society, we have developed a fascination with judging others.

While discussing this topic with executive producer Brian Teta, Goldberg struggled to recall the name of the specific show she wanted to reference.

Teta attempted to remind her that they had previously discussed it off-camera and that it airs on the same network, prompting Goldberg to respond that it wasn’t always on ABC.

She expressed her belief that the downfall of society began when people were given the power to judge others and that it has spiraled out of control since then. She mentioned how these shows invite the public to decide who the winners and losers are.

During the conversation, there were off-camera interactions between Goldberg and Teta, leading to some lighthearted moments.

Goldberg playfully questioned Teta’s actions, and he responded by saying the show had “gotten better” and that Goldberg now enjoys it.

Goldberg clarified that her opinion had nothing to do with ABC, the network on which ‘The View’ airs, and that she had already expressed her feelings to them.

‘American Idol,’ which initially ran on Fox from 2002 to 2016 and then returned in 2018 on ABC, became the focus of discussion.

The show features judges such as Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Katy Perry. The current season has generated headlines due to Perry being accused of “mom-shaming” a contestant and criticizing another’s outfit.

Sources have since clarified that Perry meant no offense, and it appears that she is now being portrayed as a harsh reality show judge.

Goldberg’s comments shed light on her perspective regarding reality TV and its influence on society, particularly regarding judgment and public opinion.
