Elon Musk, Tesla and Twitter

X to Auction Off Old Twitter Items, From Desk Chairs to Painting of Ellen DeGeneres’ Oscar Selfie

In a move that further solidifies the rebranding of Twitter as X, owner Elon Musk has orchestrated a colossal garage sale to cleanse the company’s headquarters of vestiges from its past. The auction includes a diverse array of items, ranging from standard desk chairs to creatively crafted artefacts, providing enthusiasts and collectors with a chance to own a piece of the social media giant’s history.

Since Musk’s acquisition of Twitter less than a year ago, he has undertaken a comprehensive transformation of the platform. Significant changes have been implemented, including widespread employee layoffs, the introduction of a paywall, and a reduction in account authentication protocols, among other alterations.

Prospective buyers have the opportunity to peruse an assortment of distinctive items, such as statues bearing the iconic “#” and “@” symbols, captivating paintings that capture memorable moments like Ellen DeGeneres’ viral 2014 Oscar selfie and Barack Obama’s celebration of his re-election. Additionally, unique items like a barn reconstruction from Montana and an assortment of musical instruments are part of the offering.

The sale also encompasses more conventional office furnishings, including desks, chairs, and refrigerators, allowing purchasers to acquire practical equipment alongside novel and eccentric pieces.

The auction, facilitated by Heritage Global Partners (HGP), is scheduled to commence on September 12 and will span two days in San Francisco. Prospective buyers can explore the items by appointment only, with bidding for the 584 items beginning at a modest $25.

This is not the first time Twitter has sought to part with its memorabilia. In January, the company initiated a similar auction to divest itself of comparable items that carried historical significance.

As of now, neither X nor HGP has responded to CNN’s request for commentary regarding the upcoming auction. The event stands as a testament to Musk’s commitment to steering X in a new direction, shedding its past and embracing a fresh identity under the banner of X.
