AFCON 2023 Draw: Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon get Tricky Opponents

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially unveiled the draw for the highly anticipated 2023 African Cup of Nations, scheduled to be hosted in Cote d’Ivoire.

The draw took place in Abidjan and saw the 24 participating teams divided into six groups, marking a significant step toward the commencement of the tournament in January 2024.

Notably, the teams with impressive performances in recent football competitions, including the World Cup semi-finalists Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, and the host nation, Cote d’Ivoire, were all placed in Pot 1 for the draw.

In Pot 2, football enthusiasts will find formidable teams such as the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, and the Congo. The draw’s third pot featured South Africa, Cape Verde, Guinea, Zambia, Mauritania, and Equatorial Guinea, while the final pot included Gabon, Mozambique, Namibia, Angola, Gambia, and Tanzania.

These teams were strategically allocated into groups to enhance the competitive balance of the tournament. Here is the breakdown of the groups:

  • Group A: Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bissau
  • Group B: Egypt, Ghana, Cape Verde, Mozambique
  • Group C: Senegal, Cameroon, Guinea, The Gambia
  • Group D: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Angola
  • Group E: Tunisia, Mali, South Africa, Namibia
  • Group F: Morocco, DR Congo, Zambia, Tanzania

As the excitement builds for the 2023 African Cup of Nations, fans can look forward to the opening match scheduled for January 13, 2024. The tournament’s grand finale will take place on February 11, 2024, promising an exhilarating and action-packed month of football celebration in Cote d’Ivoire.
