Birdman, B.G and Lil Wayne

Birdman Reflects on Early Days of Cash Money, Recalls Raising Lil Wayne and B.G.

Birdman, the renowned figure behind Cash Money Records, opened up about a unique challenge he faced during the label’s formative years: raising two of his label’s artists, Lil Wayne and B.G., while still a young man himself.

During a recent interview, Birdman reminisced about the early days of Cash Money, providing a glimpse into his life as a mentor and guardian for Lil Wayne and B.G., who were mere teenagers when they became part of the label.

Back in the early 1990s, Lil Wayne, known as “Baby D” at the time, and B.G., who went by “Lil Doogie,” were signed to Cash Money as part of the group B.G.’z. In 1995, when the group’s debut album, “True Story,” was released, B.G. was just 14 years old, and Wayne was a mere 12.

Birdman’s recollection of those early days made its way to social media, where he explained that during that period, both B.G. and Lil Wayne were living with him.

The interviewer began by prompting the discussion, “B.G. recorded his own album, Wayne came back, and he lived with you from then on out.” Wayne’s mother had famously encouraged him to stop rapping when he was very young, and Wayne returned to Cash Money following a difficult period.

“B.G. was already living with me,” Birdman noted. “B.G.’s mom gave him to me.”

The interviewer then asked Birdman about his age during that time, to which Birdman replied, “Seventeen, eighteen. I was a kid. I was a baby raising babies.”

While Birdman’s story aligns with the historical narrative, it is important to note that records, including newspaper accounts from past encounters with the law, indicate Birdman’s birth year as 1969, which would make him 54 years old today. This places him around his early to mid-twenties during Lil Wayne and B.G.’s early tenure with the B.G.’z.

This anecdote provides a glimpse into the early years of Birdman’s iconic label, illustrating the challenges and unique circumstances he faced as he nurtured the careers of rising stars.
