Blade Runner 2049 Maker Sues Musk Over Robotaxi Images

Alcon Entertainment, the production company behind Blade Runner 2049, has filed a lawsuit against Tesla, Elon Musk, and Warner Bros Discovery, alleging unauthorized use of imagery from the film during Tesla’s recent robotaxi launch event.

The lawsuit asserts that Alcon explicitly denied a request from Warner Bros to incorporate material from Blade Runner 2049 at the October 10 event. Despite this refusal, Alcon claims that Tesla and the event organizers used artificial intelligence to generate promotional images inspired by the film.

The legal action highlights the “substantial financial magnitude” of the alleged misappropriation, asserting that Tesla’s actions could influence potential partnerships with other brands. The lawsuit also expresses concern over Musk’s controversial public behavior, which the complaint suggests could deter companies from collaborating with Tesla.

Alcon further accuses the event organizers of creating a “false endorsement” that implies a connection between the production company and Tesla. Warner Bros, which hosted the launch at one of its movie studios, also distributed Blade Runner 2049 upon its release in 2017.

Blade Runner 2049, a sequel to the 1982 cyberpunk classic, starred notable actors including Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, and Jared Leto, and won two Academy Awards.

Elon Musk has previously cited the original Blade Runner film as a source of inspiration for Tesla’s Cybertruck, further intertwining the two brands.

In a related development, director Alex Proyas, known for the 2004 sci-fi film I, Robot, accused Musk of borrowing designs for humanoid robots and autonomous vehicles. Proyas notably responded to the title of Tesla’s robotaxi event—“We, Robot”—with a tongue-in-cheek request for the return of his designs, which garnered significant attention on social media.

However, Proyas’s claims faced skepticism, with some commentators suggesting that his own film drew heavily from existing science fiction themes.
