Sony Has Now Sold 38.5 Million PlayStation 5 Consoles

Sony announced its FY2022 Q4 earnings today, revealing that it has now sold 38.4 million PlayStation 5 consoles since launch. The company sold “a record high” 6.3 million PS5 units in the past quarter, with a total of 19.1 million units sold in its fiscal year 2022.

The Japanese company has finally solved its PlayStation 5 supply issues, and it’s also reporting higher engagement metrics in the last month compared to the same period a year ago. “The number of monthly active users for PS as a whole increased 2.3 million accounts compared to the same month of the previous fiscal year in March,” Sony said.

The PlayStation 5 maker is also confident about breaking a PS5 sales record during its new fiscal year. “We aim to continuously accelerate penetration of PS5 and aim for PS5 sell-in units for the current fiscal year to be 25 million units, the highest ever for any PS console in history,” the company said in its earnings report. It should help that Sony has a blockbuster game planned for the holiday season with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Earlier this week, Microsoft also announced its quarterly earnings results. If Microsoft no longer reports Xbox hardware sales, console sales and other hardware revenue fell 30 percent in the quarter.

So far, this new console generation isn’t looking much different from the previous one, and Sony is capitalizing on its large PlayStation 4 install base and immense brand recognition. It remains to be seen if Bethesda’s Starfield, one of the most-anticipated games of the year can become the system seller Xbox consoles really need.
