Burna Boy Says Nigerian Music Success Isn’t Worth Celebrating, Urges Artists to Aim Higher

Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy has downplayed the value of local music success, urging fellow musicians to set their sights on international recognition.

Speaking candidly, the ‘African Giant’ argued that musical achievements within Nigeria do not hold significant weight when compared to global standards. He pointed out the stark difference in streaming revenue between Nigeria and the West, noting that one million streams in Nigeria generate only around $300–$400, whereas the same number can earn up to $3,000–$4,000 in countries like the U.S. or UK.

Burna Boy also advised artists not to be misled by online fan votes or popularity on Nigerian social media, warning that this does not translate to real-world support or sold-out concerts abroad.

He emphasized the need for Nigerian artists to break out of the local bubble and build a global presence, describing it as the only way to achieve sustainable and meaningful success in the music industry.

On his Instastory, he wrote, “Dear artist, don’t let Twitter polls and ‘Naija social media fans’ deceive you. They won’t fill up any stadium for you in any part of the world.

“1,000,000 Nigerian streams = $300\€400

1,000,000 UK streams = $3000\€4000

1,000,000 US streams = $3000\€4000

1,000,000 Euro streams = $3000\€4000

“Your song being number 1 on any platform in Nigeria is not something to celebrate. Aim higher or do other business on the side. I type with love.”
