BYD Recalls Nearly 97,000 Top-Selling EVs Due to Steering Control Fault
Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is recalling approximately 97,000 of its Dolphin and Yuan Plus electric vehicles (EVs) due to a defect in the steering control unit that poses a potential fire risk. The recall, announced by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) on Sunday, affects vehicles produced between November 2022 and December 2023.
The steering component issue, according to the SAMR, prompted the company to initiate the recall in order to address the safety concern. BYD plans to implement a physical fix to rectify the fault in the recalled vehicles, though the company has not yet provided further comment on the situation.
It is currently unclear whether any of the affected EVs were exported outside of China. The Dolphin and Yuan Plus models were BYD’s best-selling vehicles in 2023, accounting for 26% of the company’s total sales, which reached three million units, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
This recall marks a rare move for BYD, which has rapidly grown to become the world’s largest seller of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The company previously recalled a small batch of its Tang plug-in hybrids in 2022 due to a battery defect that posed a fire hazard.
As BYD continues its rapid expansion in the global EV market, the company will be keen to resolve this issue and maintain its strong reputation for safety and innovation.
