Costco is Now Selling Platinum Bars for $1,089
Costco has expanded its offerings of precious metals by introducing platinum bars to its collection. The retail giant is now selling 1 oz. Swiss-made platinum bars for $1,089.99 on its website, with a Costco membership required for purchase. The bars, featuring the Roman goddess of prosperity, Lady Fortuna, are manufactured by a reputable Swiss refiner.
This new addition follows Costco’s recent success in the precious metals market. The company began selling gold bars in 2023, raking in over $100 million in sales during the first quarter. More recently, it introduced silver coins priced at $675, further broadening its appeal to collectors. Each of these items, including the platinum bars, is offered in limited quantities, maintaining Costco’s well-known “treasure hunt” shopping experience.
Despite the modest rise in platinum prices compared to gold, which has hit record highs in 2024, the introduction of platinum bars aligns with Costco’s strategy to create an atmosphere of exclusivity and urgency for its customers.
Costco’s founder has explained this approach as a deliberate tactic to keep shoppers coming back, saying, “We try to create an attitude that, if you see it, you ought to buy it because chances are it won’t be there next time.” The precious metals collection adds to the unique, limited-time items Costco offers to maintain its appeal and brand loyalty.
