Cristiano Ronaldo Beats Lionel Messi to Guinness World Record After Saudi Arabia Transfer

Cristiano Ronaldo, the renowned Portuguese footballer, has secured the top spot on the list of the world’s highest-paid athletes following his move to Saudi Arabia. According to Forbes, in collaboration with Guinness World Records, the 38-year-old has now become the highest-paid athlete globally, marking his first time holding the title since 2017.

Ronaldo’s remarkable achievement has earned him an official Guinness World Record title, reflecting his financial success. His lucrative transfer to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia played a significant role in boosting his earnings. After terminating his contract with Manchester United, leaving Europe was the only option for the prolific striker, and Saudi Arabia emerged as an audacious contender to secure his signature.

The move proved successful as Ronaldo signed a staggering contract worth £57 million per year, more than double his previous earnings at Old Trafford. This substantial financial agreement helped him amass a total income of £107.5 million in the twelve months leading up to May 1, 2023.

The icing on the cake for Ronaldo is snatching the highest-paid athlete title from Lionel Messi, who held the Guinness World Record in 2022. In the previous year, the Argentine earned £103 million, although he found solace in winning the World Cup, thereby completing his impressive collection of trophies.

Of particular note is the fact that a significant portion of Ronaldo’s earnings stems from off-the-pitch endeavours. While £35 million came from football-related activities, an impressive £68.5 million was derived from his various business ventures and sponsorships. The veteran star boasts a lifetime contract with Nike, and his CR7-branded merchandise continues to generate substantial revenue.

Ronaldo’s move to Saudi Arabia has made him a trailblazer for footballers in the Middle East. The Saudi Pro League has been making aggressive moves to entice top players from European leagues. This summer alone, notable transfers include Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, and Kalidou Koulibaly. Not limited to players in the twilight of their careers, the league has also targeted younger talents. Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota, and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic have all chosen to trade their European careers for opportunities in the Gulf State.

The ambitious Saudi Pro League continues to pursue further high-profile transfers, with Riyad Mahrez, Fabinho, and Jordan Henderson among the players reportedly in their sights. Ronaldo’s success in Saudi Arabia has not only elevated his financial standing but has also brought attention to the growing influence and appeal of Middle Eastern football.
