Doja Cat Lands in Hot Water Again for Shirt Featuring Alleged Far-Right Comedian
Doja Cat, the celebrated rapper, has found herself at the centre of controversy due to her recent fashion choice, which involved wearing a shirt featuring the image of comedian Sam Hyde. Hyde is a comedian with alleged associations with the so-called “far-right” of American politics.
The “Scarlet” rapper posted a photo on her Instagram account on Saturday, October 7, donning a black shirt with Sam Hyde’s image. She captioned the photo with the words “dum cumpster.”
Following the post, fans quickly inundated her comments section with criticism, leading Doja Cat to delete the photo. However, she later re-uploaded the same photo with one significant alteration: the image of Sam Hyde was cropped out. The new caption consisted of a series of eye-roll emojis.
Despite her attempts to address the backlash, it continued to escalate on the internet.
Sam Hyde, known for his involvement in the Million Dollar Extreme comedy troupe, often portrays himself as a transgressive and subversive comedian. However, his humour has crossed boundaries into offensive territory on multiple occasions. Hyde has been photographed making a Nazi salute alongside the infamous alt-right troll Weev, who has written antisemitic content for The Daily Stormer. Additionally, Hyde has been seen proudly displaying swastikas in the background of his performances.
This is not the first time that Doja Cat has faced controversy linked to 4chan/alt-right-type politics. In 2020, she faced public scrutiny when old footage emerged of her allegedly laughing at racist jokes in an online incel chatroom. More recently, in June, the rapper drew attention when her romantic involvement with controversial comedian J Cyrus became public. Paparazzi captured the couple sharing affectionate moments during a Mexican vacation.
Doja Cat and J. Cyrus were rumored to be in a romantic relationship earlier this year, with J. Cyrus gaining fame for his Vine videos in the mid-2010s. However, he has faced criticism throughout his career, with fans pointing out previous apologies he made for alleged sexual manipulation on Twitch and a purportedly racist tweet he shared.
