Former Sony Executive Confirms PlayStation Games on PC Are a Huge Profit Boost
Shuhei Yoshida, a longtime Sony executive who played a key role in the PlayStation brand’s growth, has revealed that bringing PlayStation exclusives to PC has been a major financial success for the company.
In a recent interview following his retirement on January 15, 2025, Yoshida acknowledged that Sony’s shift towards PC releases has been highly lucrative, describing the strategy as “almost like printing money.” He explained that porting PlayStation titles to PC allows Sony to expand its audience at a relatively low cost compared to developing new games from scratch.
Initially, Sony maintained strict exclusivity for its PlayStation titles, but in recent years, it has embraced PC releases to attract a wider player base. Yoshida, who had previously advocated for this approach, confirmed that the company is now fully invested in bringing more of its top franchises to platforms like Steam and GOG.
Beyond financial gains, the move is also strategic, particularly in markets where PC gaming dominates, such as China. Yoshida noted that while the console market in China is still small, PC releases help Sony tap into a much larger gaming audience.
One highly requested title, Bloodborne, remains an exception, with no confirmed PC port. Yoshida speculated that FromSoftware’s president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, may prefer to handle a potential PC release independently rather than relying on Sony’s direct involvement.
As Sony continues to bring its major titles to PC, the strategy is expected to not only generate significant revenue but also attract new players who may eventually transition to PlayStation consoles.
